Great piece. The details may be anachronistic but the ethos has much to teach us and remind us of. I couldn’t help but consider the values and behaviors of our political leaders, many of whom wrap themselves in the cloth of Christian ‘chivalry’ but don’t use their strength to defend the defenseless, their riches to care for the poor or sacrifice Self to virtues like fidelity.

It is easy to assume that not even one wealthy person cares about others less fortunate. That assumption is false and does not serve you nor any of us well. It is clearly documented year after year that Americans are the most generous folks in the world. Much is done and given quietly and behind the scenes.

Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe is one of the best novels depicting chivalry. It should be required reading for all young men.

Great review & reminder. We discount the wisdom of the ancients much too quickly, wrongly assuming we belong to the generation that finally understands it all & "gets it right."

This is a very inspirational piece for modern "knights" who work to defend the faith and serve God in our age. Thank you for sharing this ancient wisdom.

the primary directive must be to protect Jews and the state of Israel and to hold them foremost in one’s prayers. amen.

Maybe consider the fact that nobody cared much about these rules and they were rarely taken into consideration.

You live in a fantasy world. I wonder if you're serious or are you writing it with tongue in cheek.

This "western" perfedry and arrogance masquerading as chivalry, was clearly demonstrated during the crusader's sack of Constantinople during the fourth crusade. Holy sites were looted, priceless relics melted down, thousands of civilians were murdered. Very Christian and chivalrous.

No such word as “perfedry.”

Perhaps you think the King Richard I Lionheart was not chivalrous in signing the agreement with Muslim Sultan Salah ad-Din Yusuf?

Yes, I'm sure a source named "Catholic Education" is very impartial on the topic of Catholic crimes 🤣

adrienneep's avatar

It is the Catholic Education Resource Center and they exist to explain the faith to an inquiring and secular world. You got a problem with that?

Theodore's avatar

What is it that you don't understand? Or are you ignorant of history? Do the facts hurt your feels?

Catholic crusaders sacked the Orthodox Christian city of Constantinople for three days, pillaging, looting, raping and killing thousands of Orthodox Christians.

It's funny that your "Catholic Education" mentions nothing of these extremists crimes by the Catholics.

You are under the delusion that Wikipedia is a valid representation of objectivity or “the facts.” This limited entry is only about the fourth crusade and has exactly three references.

Besides, if the Ottoman Muslims eventually won, what are you complaining about?

You are an odd zealot. Here some more sources for you:

https://www.britannica.com/event/Sack-of-Constantinople-1204

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/constantinople

Even a Catholic source - https://www.catholictextbookproject.com/post/crusaders-sack-constantinople-april-12-1204

"Innocent III was appalled at the result of his call to crusade. Instead of delivering Jerusalem from the Muslims, the crusaders had conquered and plundered a Christian people."

There are literally hundreds of other sources for this.

🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Furthermore, as you can read about, it was the Catholic sack of Constantinople that weakened Christendom in the East and directly expedited the Muslim/Seljuk Turk takeover.
